A Nun's Diary

The feast of All Saints is absolutely one of my favorite feast days. I anticipate it with an underlying feeling of excitement and joy. Part of it I'm sure stems back to my childhood when November 1 was a day off from school and my siblings and me would spend the day trading Halloween candy collected the night before. Now I celebrate the feast honoring my special 'saints' in heaven who have become my friends over the years and have helped me lead a deeper Christian life by their good example. Two of them I got to know through their writing....

We awake each day at 3:30 AM to get ready for the office of Vigils. Often when I share this tidbit of our life people just groan and say: WHY? Well the obvious answer is to pray. But there is something else here. We generally LIKE getting up that early. WHY? Well for example, take last week. It was the week of the harvest moon. The moonlight from the harvest moon is exquisite and it is bright. It illumines everything. You hardly need a light on to see. It has a quality that is different than any other full moon. How do I know that?

Cistercian nuns do not ordinarily keep diaries of daily events, nor do they usually publish them on the Internet. However, some nuns keep personal journals where they record significant events in their spiritual journey from day to day.
