The ever encircling years have brought with them another Lent – Lent 2012. As I reflect on this graced time in the life of all Christians I realize that we could all wonder if this will be our last lent or maybe there are many others ahead of us. Who knows!
Today, the first Sunday of Lent, we follow an ancient practice from the Rule of St. Benedict found in Chapter 48 of the Rule, where it states that each monk or nun receives “a book from the library, and is to read the whole of it straight through.
I am sure we all say to Jesus from time to time, at least, “I truly want to be more faithful, more loving, more prayerful, more generous” on this road of falling, on this road of conversion. Maybe He does not want us to be more, more, more but rather less, less, less, so that his glory can shine, and so that He can show us that He alone will fulfill these longings in our hearts if it is for the Father’s greater glory, and not our own glory and self satisfaction. To be what He wants us to be!
As I sat doing Lectio today I realized how wonderful it would be if we would consciously walk with Him, day by day, all the way to our eternal union with Him! We must never be ashamed to join our voices with the cry in the Song of Songs, “I have found Him whom I love!” Surely this is what a monastic vocation means – we have found the one we want to love totally, to follow totally and embrace the way he wants us to walk with him through the journey of life.
