It was Karl Rahner SJ whose writings on this feast touched my heart deeply so many years ago. He saw the journey of the Magi as a symbol of our journey of life. And so it is. As I reflect and meditate on this event in the quiet of the night in expectation of this celebration I cannot help but realize that it is truly a symbol of the journey of my life, and that of my sisters in community, as well as our many brothers and sisters in the world. Each human heart yearns for fulfillment, for love, to find the treasure, and it is only by keeping our eye on the ‘star’ (our goal, our longing, or the treasure we seek) and by not letting it fade into oblivion, that our life continues to have meaning, a goal. True, on the journey, like the Magi, we may get lost, we may have to ask the way to go to find the treasure of our hearts, but if we continue to follow our ‘star’ wandering over hills, and sometimes climbing the mountains of life, down the valleys of hardship, sadness, depression and uncertainty, losing the clear vision we maybe once had, due to the clouds surrounding us and the mist obscuring our vision, but we must continue in faith knowing that the bright star within our hearts will eventually lead us to the one we have so longed to see, and to our surprise we will hear Him whisper, “I was with you all along your journey. I was the morning star rising in your heart each day to draw you like a magnet into my wonderful light.” Jesus, on this day I pray that you will help each one of us never to give up on our journey but continue in faith, hope and love until that treasure, which is you, is ours eternally.
