Is there a place for extroverts in the monastery?

I have been asking myself whether a monastery which lives the strict observance of silence will accept a person who is an extrovert.  Is there a place for extroverts in the monastery?   Would a man from Africa, joining one of your monasteries in the U.S., be allowed to visit his parents who are sick, or attend their funeral?

Answer:

Thank you very much for your question submitted to our website. Yes, sometimes, people who are extroverted are called by God to join a Trappist monastery, and can be very happy there. Maybe, in some ways, our lifestyle is easier or more conducive to a person who is introverted by nature. Certainly, grace builds on nature, but is not limited by it. Nobody I know would want to live in a monastery with only introverts! We are, actually, very happy that extroverts also join and settle in our communities. Regarding a person from Africa joining one of our monasteries in the U.S. - this is a special situation requiring prayer and serious discernment. Because we live a cloistered life, and because most of our houses have limited financial resources, it might be a long time before someone entering a monastery in the U.S. would be able to return to Africa for a visit. Before such a commitment was entered into, careful examination would need to be made regarding the candidates responsibilities toward his or her family in Africa. The candidate would also need to reflect prayerfully whether or not God is asking this very radical separation from family and country. If, the candidate and a community determined, over time that this truly is God's call for that person, then, after making Solemn Vows, it might be arranged for that person to visit his family in Africa. A parent near death, would likely be such a case.  If you wish to pursue this question in greater depth, I would recommend that you contact the Vocation Director of one of our men's monasteries. God bless you!
