Gentle monk known for work with Thomas Merton dies at 93

Br. Patrick Hart of Gethsemani Abbey passed to God’s care in the early morning of Feb. 22. He was 93 years old and had been in vows for 64 years.

Known to many for his work as Thomas Merton’s personal secretary and later his literary executor, Br. Patrick contributed to such projects as the the publication of Merton’s journals and letters.

In addition, he served as book review editor for Cistercian Studies Quarterly for many years and was secretary to several of Gethsemani’s abbots.

He was also one of the founders of New Clairvaux in Vina, California.
